
More than 6,5 thousand disabled citizen will not be able to vote during elections
Six and a half thousand of Lithuania citizens, by court’s decision of their mental disability, will not be able to vote at the elections of Lithuania President and European Parliament.
This year the number of mentally disabled people is two thirds greater than half a year ago.
On Wednesday, Marius Stračkaitis, a president of Lithuanian Chamber of Notaries and a notary – administrator of First Notary bureau of Klaipeda city transferred Zenonas Vaigauskas, chairman of the Central Electoral Commission a computer data storage device with information, containing a list of 6 thousand and 555 people, admitted to be mentally disabled by court. Aforementioned people will have to be excluded from the list of voters.
“Lithuanian Chamber of Notaries is the only institution in the country, which compiles, stores and manages information, sent by courts, regarding mentally disabled people. A permit to transfer information was issued by the State Data Protection Inspectorate. After the election, CEC will have to destroy information received from Lithuanian Chamber of Notaries,” – stated Marius Stračkaitis, a president of Lithuanian Chamber of Notaries and a notary – administrator of First Notary bureau of Klaipeda city.
During the last half year a number of mentally disabled people increased by 2,3 thousand. Last autumn, before Parliament election and referendum, regarding continuation of Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant, 4 thousand and 286 people were excluded from voters referendum and participants list as being mentally disabled.
